My dog's eye looks strange, vet is booked. Is it an emergency?

I need advice please, what is wrong with his eye? There are no appointments left at my vets and I'm really worried about him

I can't tell you exactly what is wrong with his eye, it could be more than one thing but it is an absolute emergency, you need to explain that to your vet and he should see you right away even if he does not have an apointment for you today, if he does not agree to see you , you need to take Milo to a different vet, either way he needs to be seen today.

Should I take him in to have his eye looked at? He doesn't seem to be in pain and I'm not sure what's causing this.
Hi there! Thank you for posting this question. Yes, I think his eye should be seen. The motto I learned in vet school is “ a closed eye is a painful eye and a painful eye is an ocular emergency”. I would be worried that he could have scratched it, he could have a retrobulbar abscess, or even a disorder called Horners syndrome. They will stain the eye and look for any wounds. I think you are correct in wanting to have Millie seen as soon as possible, as in some cases a sudden change to the eyes as you are describing may be causing pain and could cause permanent vision problems if not addressed right away. Good luck, and I hope she feels better soon!

Hi there. My 5 month old puppy woke up with her conjunctiva bulging in one eye. By the days end, it had worsened by about 50%. Most the vets in our area are closed until Monday. Is this something I should make an emergency appt for tomorrow (Sunday)

What is showing in her eye is her third eyelid, and given that it has worsened over the day, yes, I do recommend an emergency appointment. The eye is such a delicate and important structure that any problem with it should be considered an emergency. This is because leaving it untreated can lead to vision loss. It could be that she has an eye infection or could have injured her eye causing the third eyelid to come out, but a vet can make the correct diagnosis and give her a treatment for it. Yes, there is a concern with this. His eye could be cloudy due to an eye infection, cataracts, trauma to the eye, or glaucoma. The eye is such a delicate and important structure that any problem with it is considered an emergency. That's because leaving it untreated can lead to vision loss. I would have your dog seen by a vet right away, who can diagnose what is causing the cloudiness in his eye, and can treat him for it.

Oh that does look really bad. Unfortunately this cannot be treated at home and leaving this untreated can lead to vision loss. This is an emergency, and Ziggy has to see a vet now. Please take him into an ER vet clinic; if there isn't one in your area, there will be a vet on call for emergencies. If you can't take her, I would find someone to take her for you. If money is a problem, I can give you some resources that may help you afford a vet. You can see if your vet accepts payment plans, if there is a low cost clinic in your area, or you can apply for Care Credit online. There is also an organization called Red Rover that give grants for treatment of sick animals, and you can see if you qualify for one of their grants. My cats eye looks sore it seems to have got worse should I be concerned or will it heal it's self
Hello, thank you for using Boop by Petco. It is very difficult to make a recommendation without at least seeing a photo of the eye. All I can tell you without seeing a photo is that if the eye looks worse to you then Millie needs to see a vet. Eyes are very delicate and can go from bad to worse very quickly to the point where she could lose not only her vision but the actual eye itself. I consider eye problems emergencies so I suggest you get her to a vet as soon as possible. Best wishes.

Poor Quincy! It's hard to tell exactly what's going on without being able to do a more complete eye exam in person, but from what I can see in the photo, I'm very concerned that she may have a severe corneal ulcer - this is basically a partial hole in the surface of the eye, which can be very serious. Because of this, I would recommend having her seen at an emergency clinic today for a full eye exam. If she does have a deep/severe corneal ulcer, having it treated as soon as possible will give her the best chance of recovery without losing vision in the affected eye, or even losing the eye itself.
