The first human strain of Toxoplasma gondii was discovered in 1939 and is the so=called RH strain. It is highly virulent in rats and mice and will kill them, but unfortunately it is also a highly lethal infection in humans. While most humans have at some time in their life been exposed to toxoplasma gondii, the usual strain is not normally causing illness in humans other than in unborn fetuses.
