Why does my puppy have a snout rash and itchy ears after Revolution?

Hello. I have a female 4 month old blue nose pit bull. She has a rash in her snout and is also pulling and itching at her ears often. I just applied a dose of Revolution flea and mite treatment yesterday. Are these symptoms related to the ear mites? Or is this something else?

In dogs, itching at the ears is a sign of an ear infection, but those can be caused by yeast or bacteria in addition to ear mites. There's no problem giving Bella the Revolution, as she needs protection from fleas, but have her seen by the vet for scratching at her ears to make sure this behavior isn't caused by bacteria or yeast. The vet can also check out the rash on snout, which could be caused by an allergic reaction. Give your vet a call today to make an appointment for her. Best of luck.

I would not be worried if the flea is dead. It means the product is working. Unfortunately the flea does have to come into contact with the product in order to then die, so you may see a few fleas but they should be dead. Also I would try to cut back on the frequency of the baths because this can strip some of the product from the skin, making it less effective. A bath once every 2-4 weeks is ideal. Mia likely is scratching because she has dry skin due to overbathing or she is reacting to the flea you recently found on her. Try to use a conditioner to help rehydrate her skin and then ask your vet about any antihistamines that can be prescribed to help with her itching if it’s still present. Unfortunately, if you are unable to take her in for diagnostic testing, the best thing you can do is use the drugs that were provided to you by your veterinarian already. Demodectic mites and/or fleas would definitely be the top differential for these symptoms in a pup of this age. Often multiple treatments with Revolution or a drug like it will be required to get the symptoms under control. Sometimes, even if the symptoms are resolves, continued treatment Revolution is recommended for another couple of rounds to make sure there are no residual mites still living on the body's surface. I would agree that a grain allergy at this age would be highly unusual but certainly not impossible. Hope this makes sense.

It would be expected for the fleas to be killed by the Pet Armor by now, but it would be worthwhile to wait a week before exploring other options. Revolution has a different medication and would be OK to apply at this time, but should be used cautiously in some dogs. There's always a possibility that he may be sensitive to the medication and it can be risky with dogs that are heartworm positive. For this reason, it's best to only use Revolution if prescribed by a veterinarian. It's possible that he may have a sensitivity to fleas, which can make the itching much worse. It's also possible that there is another problem like mange contributing to the itch, so it's best to have a vet evaluate him if this problem is not resolved soon. The vet may suggest another treatment, or provide medication to help relive his itchiness. I hope that helps and Tucker gets better soon.

I don't think that I would be overly worried about these at this time. I highly doubt these lesions are related to the Revolution. I suggest you just monitor these for now and if they don't resolve or worsen then get her back to your vet for an exam. They could just be scrapes. If you want to apply a thin layer of Neosporin to them for the next few days you can do that. Hope this helps. Best wishes.

My beagle/ jack russel six month puppy has a rash under her armpit that is really bugging her and looks very painful. She is also not acting like herself (very tired, clingy). I just want to know what it is and what I should do.
Those spots on Bella could be several things including allergies, skin mites, flea bites, ringworm (which humans can get) or a bacterial infection. You can try adding in an omega 3 fatty acid supplement for dogs, this can help improve the skin health. You may also try changing her diet to something like Royal Canin or Nutro as they are aimed at skin health. The best option is to have Bella examined since the rash is bothering her. This will figure out the cause the fastest and bring her relief sooner. If you cannot get to the veterinarian's office, you can wash the lesions with soap once a day and rinse well (don't wash her whole body, just those spots). Protect the areas from licking or scratching with an elizabethan collar. If they don't start looking better within about a week or if they get worse, have her examined by his veterinarian who may prescribe medications. Yes, it certainly could be Parker is having a reaction to the Revolution. I'd have him seen by a vet asap to get this itching and wounds treated and to discuss another flea medication for him. An oral one may be better.

I am sorry to hear about Bella! While a skin issue like this isn't considered an emergency in the sense that it isn't life threatening, in some cases a pet is so miserable and itchy that owners will elect to pay an emergency fee to get the pet treated right away. That is a personal decision you have to make based on how bothered you feel Bella is and whether or not it can wait. You may talk to your vet about whether or not they feel it would be safe to give her an antihistamine such as diphenhydramine or cetirizine in the meantime to try to decrease the itching, or to apply a topical hydrocortisone cream to decrease the itching. If she is rubbing/scratching constantly she may also be at risk of causing an ear hematoma, where blood vessels in the ear pinnae (the floppy part of the ear) can rupture and cause a painful swelling. For this reason you may consider picking up an e-collar for her (you can find these at most pet stores) to try to prevent self trauma.

A rash with itching and hair loss around the eyes and snout is most often caused by demodectic mange, certain types of allergies, or an auto-immune disease such as pemphigus foliaceus. If things are not improving with her current treatment, I would take her back to your vet for a recheck or get a second opinion, if needed. She may need some diagnostic testing such as a skin scrape or even a biopsy of the affected skin to help diagnose the problem so that it can be treated effectively.

As your vet said This is probably due to an allergy, although it could also be infection or mites. It is very important anyway , in order to rule out skin parasites, to treat with a high quality flea treatment (advocate or advantage), then ask the vet to perform a skin scrape - this might reveal an infection or a mite infestation. If all of those came back negative, the next step is to treat the allergy symptomatically and try to discover the cause of the allergy. Three main type of allergies are usually affecting pets: food allergies, flea and parasite related ones and environmental type (allergens coming from trees, pollens, dust etc etc). Some medications can be given by the vet in order to repair any possible skin lesions (like steroids and antibiotics). Buster collar may be useful to avoid further scratching/rubbing. Revolution is a prescription medication that will repel mosquitoes. You can also find repellant ointments at the pet store that will help, though you can’t place them on the nose. I am concerned that it looks like there may be infection, and I would recommend that you have Bella checked out by a vet.
