Hello I just rescued a dog from a shelter that is positive for lime. He is dragging himself along the floor to itch the infected area. What can I do to help the rash while he takes his doxycycline

Keep the area clean and dry. If he is licking, place an e-collar (cone) on him. Make sure he isn't dragging or scooting because his anal glands are full. The doxycycline, although effective against the Lyme organism, may not be the best choice to treat a bacterial skin infection. Discuss systemic and topical treatment as well as any underlying causes (fleas, mites, allergies, etc.) with your veterinarian.
