Could my dog's movement during aspiration affect her cyst diagnosis?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 9 years and 3 months old | 4 lbs

Precious is extremely afraid of the vet. She literally holds onto my shoulder. & she refuses to let them look at her because she won’t stay still. she had a needle aspiration done & could her movement cause the vet to see cells she couldn’t name? I completely forgot about that detail. Could it still possibly be a cyst? Can cysts stay for 9 months, barely grow, & then eventually start looking like there’s pus in it? It has been removed.

Hello. Poor Precious. Her fear of veterinarians is a common situation. I do not think her movement caused the appearance of unusual cells because unless your veterinarian is a board-certified pathologist, identifying some cell morphology is tough. Cysts can definitely remain stable for many months & for some reason become active. Cells or bacteria can invade & cause a benign cyst to fester-up. I am glad it was removed as this is usually curative. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
