My dog limps at home but walks normally outside. Is it hip dysplasia?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Doberman Pinscher | Male | unneutered | 2 years and 6 months old

my doberman (2.5 yo) is limping on his back legs and has difficulty with sitting down and standing up, but when we go out he pulls like crazy (as usual) and walks completely normal. Should I be worried about hip dysplasia?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! What you are describing can be signs of hip dysplasia especially since it is both hind legs. If it is more sudden then it could be growing pains like panosteitis or another joint like the knee is affected. Lyme disease can affect the joints or he could be experiencing a muscle strain or sprain. Hip dysplasia is diagnosed from X-rays. Keeping Amon Ra lean and thin will help him. Discussing starting a joint supplement like Dasuquin or Glycoflex life long may also help. I wish you the best!
