Why is my puppy's scrotum skin loose after neutering surgery?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 7 months and 22 days old | 35 lbs

I just got my puppy neutered about 3 weeks ago and now that the swelling is gone it looks like his balls have sucked backed up and there's just skin hanging. I'll attach A picture taken from the back view. Please tell me if there's something wrong.

Thank you for providing pictures of Blitiz! This looks normal, you can see the scrotal skin hanging loosely after removing the testes, and over time, the skin should tighten up. It looks like the area has healed just fine, there is nothing wrong :-)

It actually looks likes it is healing great. If the scrotum as painful and swollen I would have it checked out but if it is not painful, no fever, no discharge I would just watch him. My 11-month-old dog was neutered on Monday. It’s already Saturday, and I noticed that his scrotum is turning dark. Is that normal? Thank you.
The skin on the scrotum can change in texture and color slightly after a neuter as the skin is contracting and any post operative bruising is resolving. From what I can see in the pictures (thanks for attaching!) this looks within the normal range of what to expect! If the discoloration is progressing significantly , swelling is increasing etc. I would have a veterinarian evaluate Moki. Remember to prevent moki from licking the area. Hope he heals very quickly !

Thank you for using Boop by Petco! I'm not able to see the incision, but what looks like the scrotum. When a dog, especially an older dog who's testicles have developed, is neutered, the scrotum (or the sack that the testicle is in) can have some empty space in it. This is completely normal and can get smaller with time, or stay the same. Unfortunately, Pokey absolutely must keep his collar on at all times, even when he is sleeping. The collar prevents him from biting or licking the area. Not only can he pull out his stitches and hurt himself, but he can actually cause the area to become infected. If he is not comfortable with the cone, you can get him a donut-shaped version that some dogs find more comfortable. It is very important that the collar stays on to avoid complications. I hope this helps!

My dog was recently neutered but he still has testicles in his sac. Is this common? Should I be worried?
If his sac looks like it has testicles in it, this is most likely due to swelling from the surgery. This is called a scrotal hematoma, and is fairly common after a [neuter surgery](https://www.petcoach.co/article/benefits-of-neutering-castrating-male-dogs-puppies). The swelling can definitely look like testicles, but it's just fluid and blood clots from the procedure. It should resolve on its own within the next 7-10 days as long as you [keep him calm and quiet](https://www.petcoach.co/article/6-ways-to-rest-your-pet-after-surgery-or-injury) and prevent him from licking at the surgical site by using an [Elizabethan collar (e-collar)](https://www.petcoach.co/article/e-collars-for-cats-dogs-types-of-collars-and-diy-options/). The testicles themselves are removed during the neuter, so they're definitely not still there. If you have any concerns about how it looks, you can always have him rechecked next week with the vet who did his surgery to make sure everything is healing as expected.

Yes, this is likely normal. There is usually some post operative swelling. The scrotum will eventually shrink down. Monitor for excessive swelling, discomfort, lethargy, bleeding, bruising or discharge.

The area you are pointing at in the picture looks like Señor Bean's scrotum. It will not contain his testicles anymore as he was neutered, which involves removing the testicles. Sometimes the area can fill up with a little fluid after surgery. It looks like the incision is intact, and often the swelling will go away on its own over time, but I recommend calling your vet if you are concerned. Since retrieving the retained testicle is a little more invasive than a regular neuter, it's not unusual for there to be some puffiness and a little oozing, especially if he's feeling good and is moving around. If he seems fine otherwise and the site continues to improve, I would keep an eye on it. You may want to call your vet and maybe send them this pic to get their opinion, but I don't see anything to be alarmed about. If he loses his appetite, acts like he's not feeling well, if the site gets red, hot, oozes blood or pus, get him in to see your vet right away.

My dog was neutered a little over 1 week ago. The surgery went well and his stitches have been healing well. However, the scrotum has been very swollen. I took him back to the vet yesterday and they gave us some more anti-inflammatory syringes. After
Poor guy...that does look uncomfortable. It may be infected, but I would suspect a discharge at the incision or a fever, lethargy. It is more likely that this is a scrotal hematoma. These typically do resolve in their own, but it can take weeks. Keep his activity level as low as possible to discourage more swelling, continue the anti inflammatory medication, make sure he cannot bite or lick it by using a “cone” if needed. It can provide some relief if he will allow you to do a cold compress on the area. Try wrapping an ice pack with cloth and apply to the area for 15 minutes..three times daily. Hello and thank you for contacting Boop by Petco. Swelling of scrotum is not uncommon after neutering. As long as the swelling is not painful to touch, is not bothering Sheldon and he is acting as normal, you can monitor him at home. However, if the scrotum becomes hot to touch, painful or your dog is lethargic, you should take him back to your vets for a course of painkillers and anti-inflammatory medications. Typically, this kind of swelling goes down a few days after castration.
