My dog's red eyelid is irritated from allergies. What can I put on it?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Shih Tzu | Male | neutered | 1 year and 9 months old | 17 lbs

Good afternoon. My dog's left eyelid is red and there is a small patch where it is even redder (please see the photo). He has allergies and his eyes have been watering a lot, so I am thinking that is the cause but am not certain. Last night he rubbed it for a few seconds, but he otherwise seems okay. Is there anything I can put on topically to help this?

The red spot on the outside lower lid looks like a scratch or abrasions that will leave a scab. It is best to get it seen by a vet as antibiotics that are safe for the eye may be needed to clear the eyelids and the scab. Allergies may the starting cause and the more he rubs it, the worse it may get. You can try some benadryl to help with redness and the itching. Apply a warm compress and flushing the eye with saline eye wash may also help provide comfort.
