My Chihuahua collapses, kicks, and stays conscious. Is it a seizure?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Female | 6 lbs

My Chihuahua probably once or twice a month will be perfectly fine and all of a sudden she will collapse and start yelling and kicking her legs but that's all she can move I'll run to her and calm her down while she goes thru this she's 100% conscious but unable to move anything except her legs then 30-45 seconds at the extreme longest then after she's able to move again she stays by my side and refuses to move for at minimum 15 minutes then when she gets up she's back to normal what could it be

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! It sounds like a seizure. I would recommend video taping an episode and showing your Vet. Causes of seizures depend on age. In dogs 1-5 epilepsy is the most common cause. In puppies: toxins, infectious or congenital problems and older than 6 years of age we worry about organ failures and brain tumors. One to 2 episodes a month may warrant starting medications. I would recommend full blood work with urine, thyroid testing if older than 6 and tick testing. If all that is normal then consider starting medications. i wish Bella the best!
