Crusty patch on my dog's ear: vet or can I use a topical solution?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Goldendoodle | Female | spayed | 1 year and 8 months old | 55 lbs

My goldendoodle has a crusty patch on the edge of her ear. At first I thought it was fleas but that isn’t the case. Should I be concerned? I don’t want to rush her to the vet for something that can be fixed with a topical solution. Thanks!

It looks like Luna could have ear margin dermatitis. This can be caused by a bacterial infection, mites, or a benign skin condition like seborrhea. While I think your veterinarian might end up prescribing a topical medication I think it would be best to have them take a look to help rule out mites or infection as a cause.
