My cat has bloody stool, mucus, and is vomiting. Is he constipated?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | unneutered | 10.2 lbs

Fassa hasn't been feeling well , he has bright red blood and mucus in his stool and just going a little bit at a time like maybe a quarter size spot (also not always going in his box) and is vomiting on and off. He is still eating and drinking and it doesn't seem to be consistent . He was good yesterday but the day before and today it's happening. Nothing has changed (same food , litter , ect ) he isn't acting any different or acting lathargic ... Is this something we should be worried about ?

I would be worried about constipation. If he is having trouble passing stool they will get blood and mucus. They will also vomit when they are constipated. He may need an enema to help remove the feces. They may be able to feel his belly and see if they feel hard stool present or they may want to take xrays. Try and encourage as much water as possible and if he will eat canned food try that. The high moisture content can help. IF it continues they will want to see him and give an enema and possibly put him on a stool softener.

If this has been happening for six months and is occasional, then I don't think he needs to see a vet more urgently at this time. The straining to defecate could be from hard, dry feces, worms, or other abnormality within the rectum. You may consider getting him some stool softeners (can get this at the pet store), or adding more water to his food if the stool appears too hard and dry. Below is a link to a fecal score guide. This will help you determine if there is a problem with the feces. I hope that helps and Atticus gets better soon.
