What fish or other tank mates are best for a betta in a 3-gallon tank?

What type of fish can I keep with my adult male betta fish, he is in a 3 gallon tank.

Most of the compatible fish are schooling fish that do best in groups of 4-8. This would include Neon Tetras, Ember Tetras, Harlequin Rasboras or White Cloud Minnows. That many fish may be too much for a 3 gallon tank. Other non-fish option include Ghost Shrimp, Zebra Snails or African Dwarf Frogs.

    Male Bettas an be kept with most species of community fish. The most common tankmates are Pygmy Corys, White Cloud Mountain Minnows, Harlequin Rasboras and even African Dwarf frogs. Given the size of the tank though, tankmates would not be recommended. Most community fish do best in small schools which would overcrowd a 2.5 gallon tank.

    Tetras may be a bit nippy. Rasboras are schooling fish, so you'll need at least 5-6. Make sure your tank can handle this number of fish. Shrimp (red cherry, ghost or amano) or snails (nerites) also make good tankmates.

Hi Tori, I have found that fancy guppies are pretty, fun, and small fish that would do well in a small tank. Mollies would be another good choice. A 3 gallon could probably support 3 or 4 of them well. Beta fish don't seem to care much about snails in My experience. Have fun!

I want to get both of my betas tank mates and one of my friends told me that harlequin rasbora's and neon tetras are good I just want to make sure they are. Or if there are better fish I could put in their tank.

To safely mix fish species together, there are a few considerations to keep in mind. First, you want to choose fish that have similar temperature requirements as your betta. Otherwise the fish can be stressed. Second, you want to get species that have similar oxygen requirements - bettas don’t need a lot of bubblers in their tanks, but not all species are like that, so unless you want to do some adjustments to you betta tank, it is a good idea to get other species that don’t need a lot of oxygen. Third, it depends on how many gallons your tank is. Overcrowding is a common problem for many fish owners, and it can make it very difficult to keep up on the water quality. The general rule of thumb you can use is one square inch of fish per gallon. When using this rule, go based on the adult size of fish, because often people get fish that are young and small and don’t anticipate that they will get bigger! The small size will limit the species of fish as well as the number. White Cloud Minnows or Guppies would do fine in a small tank. You could keep no more than 2 or 3 fish total. If you are looking for company for your Betta, the same species can be kept. Other options include Otocinclus (Otos), Corys, Platys or Harlequin Rasboras. Again, no more than one or two in addition to the Betta. Water changes for any tank are simple. Change no more than 30% total volume at a time. Use a water conditioner to remove harmful chemicals and make sure the water is temperature matched to prevent stress or shock. Rinse the filter in tank water, not tap water, to preserve beneficial bacteria. Vacuum the substrate every couple of weeks.

I know that bettas aren’t technically lonely if they are alone but would it be okay to add a snail or anything else to the a 3.7 gallon tank with a male betta
A snail would be fine but anything else and the Betta may try to bully or pick at it. Most fish ignore snails but watch closely that Norman does not take a lot of interest in the snail. If he does, you will need rehome the snail.

Ideally, a 5 gallon tank would be better for both of them, but as long as she is a "passive" fish, an ADF should be fine with her. You'll need to monitor for any aggression initially because female Bettas can be just as aggressive as the males.

It is very difficult to see the markings of these fish from the pictures. Many fish may be able to live with a Betta if there is a large enough tank. Here are some guidelines on how to pick tabkmates for a Betta. No nibblers – if a fish nibbles at a Betta fish they will get bit back! Bigger fish and colorful fish could be seen to be intimidating – you don’t want to intimidate a fighting fish! A 2.5 gallon tank is fine for a Betta and 2 snails. If you have artificial plants, use ones made of silk instead of plastic which can harm delicate fins. You'll need a heater also. Bettas are tropical fish and do best between 78 F and 80 F.
