Do parrots get attached to other birds? What happens if they separate?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Bird | Unknown - Bird | Female | 32 years and 3 months old

I have inherited a female African Gray that is 32 years old. I have had her in a room with my Red Bellied parrot of course in separate cages. My sister is going to take the African Gray do these birds get attached to each other? they have been together for almost three years. Thank you, Sheri

Birds can form bonds with each other, especially if they live together or interact often. If you have to separate them, you may notice that both birds are a little depressed after, especially if they were very close/friendly in their time together. Adding in some extra toys and giving a bit more personal attention to the birds may help them cope with the loss of their friend during the transition.
