My dog has an infected eye socket. Will surgery help stop infections?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Smooth Fox Terrier | Female | spayed

I have a rescued street dog that is blind in one eye and the vets say the other eye was gouged out. She gets occasional infections in the eye socket that was gouged out. She paws at the eye socket and walks along the wall rubbing that side of her face on the wall. I do not want her to suffer any more than she already has. Will surgery to sew the eye socket shut likely solve the problem with infections?

That will depend on why he has infections there, I think your vet who has seen the socket can better advise you on that. There may be a foreign body in there that may need to be removed, or a tumor, at least something is irritating that side of the head and that will need to be investigated. I think you need to discuss this with your vet and, rather than sowing the eye socket shut, it may only be necessary to debride the area and clean it up and then resuture it.
