How to protect my young puppy from parvo and ticks after dog park?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Poodle | Female | spayed | 2 months and 18 days old | 36 lbs

My 11 weeks old standard poodle pup only had her first vaccine so far but she interrected with friend’s fully vaccinated and healthy dogs who have been to dog park and residential park. Does Parvo only transfer by feces digestion or can be transferred by skin touch too? What about ticks? How do I protect my pup at this point? I am bringing her in for her second vaccine next weekend.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! If she is playing with healthy vaccinated dogs and is current on her puppy shots then she is unlikely to get parvo. Parvo is transmitted fecal-oral or from fomites (touching objects that have the virus on it). Be sure that Coco gets her DHPP every 3-4 weeks until she gets 2 past 12 weeks. If she has lapsed between vaccines then there is risk. As for tick control she is old enough for Nexgard which is a monthly oral chewable as well as Frontline which is topical. Be sure to start heartworm prevention as well. I wish you the best!
