Does professional dog teeth cleaning remove enamel? Is it safe?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Exotic Shorthair | Male | neutered | 3 years and 8 months old

Bandit will be 4 soon I was going to have his teeth cleaned but people are saying once you have it done it takes the enamel off then there teeth will start to get bad. Why would enamel come off??? Vet says he only has a little plaque. Should I hold off or have it done. Some say have it done other say no. I don’t what to do now. I don’t understand why they would do it so hard the enamel would come off. Thank you

Hi there and thank you for using pet coach to address your concern. The enamel should not come off during the scaling process of a dental cleaning, this is just not true. Dental cleaning remove tartar from the enamel. The enamel is the protective surface of the tooth. Enamel can be damaged, but typically from trauma or disease. Dental cleanings are very beneficial for maintaining the health of the teeth and I recommend it at least once per year. I hope this helps guide you in the right direction. Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns and I would be more than happy to help you further.
