Pet's info: Dog | Golden Retriever | Male | neutered | 6 months and 16 days old | 55 lbs
My dog has a bad case of dirreha and was not eating much yesterday. Around 4 pm he started vomiting and could not hold down water. We gave him small amounts of Pedialyte to be able to hydrate him and to give him electrolytes throughout the night. He will not eat food yet, but he is able to keep down the Pedialyte better. Our primary vet isn’t open until tomorrow, should we seek immediate medical attention or wait to bring him in first thing in the morning?

Hi there and thank you for using pet coach to address your concern. If he does not have anymore episodes of vomiting or diarrhea and is feeling better, I would keep an eye on him until the morning and then take him in. If he is lethargic right now, I would get him seen now because he is likely dehydrated and needs fluids administered under the skin for hydration. He may also have eaten something that caused all of this, have an infection or have an intestinal obstruction. I hope this helps guide you in the right direction. Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns and I would be more than happy to help you further.

Hi and thank you for using PetCoach! I am sorry that Marshall vomited twice today. If Marshall is acting normal otherwise, eating well and not having anymore vomiting or diarrhea, then I think it is ok to monitor him. I would withhold food for the night, offer him a small meal int he morning and see how he does. He could have an upset stomach from eating something he should not have or it could be more serious like a foreign object is stuck in his intestines. If Bear continues to vomit, seems lethargic or does not want to eat, then I would take him in to see the vet sooner rather than later. Here is an article on vomiting in dogs that may be helpful for you: https://www.petcoach.co/article/vomiting-in-dogs/ Good luck!

As very often these episodes are only dietary related I would suggest to withhold food for the next 8-12 hours and then start feeding with a bland diet based on boiled chicken and rice in small portion every 6 hours for the following 48hours. Then gradually reintroduce the normal diet over 5 days. I would definitively recommend a veterinary check up if the signs persist or you notice lethargy or inappetence. Please do not hesitate to contact us again on the forum or by requesting a consultation if you have any more questions or to discuss it any further.

I recommend getting a stool sample on Bear and check for parasites. I would put Bear on a bland diet (prescription based). I would also disc an antacid with your veterinarian. What type of dog food is Bear on? Different types of food can upset a dogs stomach so making sure his diet is appropriate is important. Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
