My 8-week-old kitten has red, irritated eyes. Is it an infection?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | unneutered | 2 months and 2 days old | 3 lbs

We just adopted a 8 week old kitten. He has something with his eyes. The owner told us it was an eye cold. I've been using warm water and cloths to keep his eyes clean and from clumping together but his eyes still seem red and irritated. Any suggestions? Thank you.

Hello, so sorry that Milo is having this issue. He definitely has an eye infection but from what organism I don't know. Many of the organisms that cause these infections show the same symptoms so it is impossible to distinguish between them without testing. My two top guesses are herpes (virus) and chlamydia (bacteria). Regardless of the underlying cause you will need to get him some medications from your vet. This is not something you can treat at home. Hope this helps. Best wishes!

It looks as Milo is suffering from an eye infection, it is relatively common in kittens and they can loose their sight if left untreated. you will need to take him to the vet the first chance you get, the vet will check the eyes, if it is indeed a simple eye infection your vet will prescribe an antibiotic eye drops that will probably solve the problem in no time.
