My rescued kittens aren't pooping. What should I do and when to worry?

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | 0.375 lbs

3 days ago I rescued 4 kittens. No umbilical cords. Eyes & ears closed. Eyes opening. Healthy-looking, strong & mobile. 2 have pooped with warm-wet cloth stimulation. 2 have still not. All pee afer every feeding with no trouble. When should I start to worry? What do I do if they dont eliminate soon? I am poor & animal control is a death sentence for them here. There are no nprograms here. I can afford to care for, vaccinate, and spay-neuter them. Just cant afford vet fees unless truly necessary.

I'm assuming you are giving them a kitten formula. I'd tried diluting it a bit with water for the two kittens who aren't pooping to see if that helps them pass feces. If this doesn't help them pass feces, then I would say it is necessary for them to see the vet. They should be passing feces at least once or twice a day, and if another day goes by without them pooping and you've tried diluting their formula, then I would start to worry. As for the two that are pooping, do not dilute their formula. Best of luck, I hope this helps! How lovely of you to look after them :-)

Constipation is fairly common in orphaned kittens who are being fed milk replacer. You may want to try adding a little extra water if you are using a powdered formula. If they have not defecated in three days they may need enemas to help them go, so I would recommend seeing a veterinarian. The veterinarian can also examine them and make sure they seem healthy otherwise.

Mother cats will lick a kitten's bottom to stimulate defecation and urination, and this can be done by a foster parent by using a warm wet washcloth to gently rub their bottoms to stimulate a bowel movement. If the kittens are still unable to go, speaking with or scheduling an appointment with your local vet is best. For keeping [kittens](https://www.petcoach.co/article/5-myths-about-kittens) warm during feeding, you can create a little kitten "burrito" by wrapping them in a warm towel or blanket. This will help them to retain their body heat while drinking. Making sure the kitten formula is also slightly warmed up will help prevent a decrease in body temperature.

Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! Orpaned kittens should be bottle fed kitten formula until 3 weeks of age. At 3 weeks you should start canned kitten food and have them off the formula by 5 weeks. Formula is very constipating. I would dilute the formula with water or change brands or mix 2 brands together. You need to stimulate her to urinate and defecate after each bottle feeding, which should be every 2-3 hours, with a warm soft cotton ball. Constipation can be very serious in new born puppies and kittens. Fleas are light brown and move around. If you can post a picture that would help us tell what they are. Since she is so young I recommend using a fine tooth comb and manually removing what you are seeing. She is too young for flea medications or flea baths. I wish you and Sasha the best!

Kittens need to be stimulated to poop: take a warm washcloth and gently rub her anal opening and she should defecate. Kittens who are bottle fed formula will sometimes become constipated, so if she goes another 24 hours without defecating you should see a veterinarian to see if she may be constipated. My kittens are less than a week I’m bottle feeding due to mother regection but I’ve tried masagging n warm washcloth n more n they still won’t poop what do I do
My suggestion is to get them to a vet for an exam. They need to eliminate or they will get extremely ill. The vet may need to give them enemas - DO NOT attempt this at home as you can injure their colon. They may have a worm impaction so the vet may decide to deworm them too. Best wishes.

I have two 4-week-old kittens who were orphaned around 1AM on Saturday. I've been trying to care for them, but they haven't taken to bottle or syringe, and show no interest in a wet food slurry. When I stimulate them, they'll urinate but not defecate
I'm sorry to hear you're struggling with the kittens! At 4-weeks they should be starting to get a little interested in wet food, so continuing to try the slurry should help. You can put a little on a spoon or on their noses to see if they will lick it off to encourage them to try it. Keeping the formula warmed and feeding them on their stomachs (in the same position they'd be in when nursing from mom) may also help them recognize you are trying to feed them. If they're not on solid foods yet, they may not have a whole lot in the way of stool production, and any stool they produce may be very liquidy still. It's a good idea to bring them to the vet anyway, especially if orphaned, as they may need to start getting vaccinations sooner to account for the loss of mom's natural antibodies, and your vet can examine them, deworm them, and treat any issues as needed. Hi there, well done for being so good as to look after these little kittens! It is no easy task. Unfortunately with abandoned kittens there can be issues that have begun long before the adopter ever come into their lives, it can take these issues a while to manifest as disease in the kittens. Such issues could be due to infection, malnutrition or underlying congenital problems. Even kittens which have been with their mother from the start and have adequate colostrum can begin to fade. I say that more as a general point because successfully hand rearing kittens can be very difficult even when you are as dedicated as yourself. Having said that your kittens may be fine and just struggling to put on weight due to a poor start, you may find they are slow but suddenly start to grow. Hello. If these are orphan kittens, then the change in diet will really change their bowel habits. The stool at this age will still be soft, but should not be watery. Make sure your replacement formula is prepared properly & is made fresh daily. Kittens should poop every day from birth & require gentle stimulation of the genital area to do so. Also, these kitten may need to be dewormed. We recommend checking the stool starting at 2 weeks of age & if eggs are seen, treat with an appropriate wormer. At four weeks of age, they should start pooping on their own and being weaned onto kitten food. To help them wean and to get used to dry food, I would soak a high quality kitten formulated dry food in warm water until soft. Then mix that with kitten formula such as KMR to make a mush the consistency of oatmeal. Over the next two weeks, gradually increase the amount of dry kitten food and decrease the amount of water and KMR you use until they are eating the dry kitten food only. As for not pooping on their own, give it another week to see if they become more independent. If they don't, have them seen by a vet. Best of luck.
