How to get my dog to eat dry food only? Worried they'll starve.

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Dogs currently eat dry food mixed with canned dog food. Would really like to teach them to eat their dry food only as it’s almost summer and we take them places a lot. But I’m worried if I do they would starve themselves....or only eat every 2 days or something. How can I do this? And would they starve themselves? How long would it take? Would training treats hinder progress? I could use kitten food so they always have dry food like food (love kitten food a lot!) r they too skinny?

Although pictures can be deceiving, they do not seem to be underweight, ribs or spine are not visible. Dogs generally will not starve themselves unless unwell and 5-7days of fasting is generally accepted as safe. I recommend offering food for 20mibs, 4times a day initially but variety is your enemy here. I recommend choosing a high quality, tasty complete formula and use this for training treats also
