Why does my Cavalier with IMHA on prednisone have severe skin sores?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Cavalier King Charles Spaniel | Female | spayed | 6 years and 9 months old | 18.5 lbs

My caveleir King Charles has IMHA for 5 months. She is down to 2.5 mg of prednisone once daily & atopic 25 mg twice daily. Her HCT numbers have gone up but she has terrible ulcer like sores on her face & other areas with hair loss that we thought the prednisone caused. They have gottten much worse, maybe cushions or lymphoma causing it? Could it be a allergy reaction to atopica or a newly partial raw diet? We are days away from euthanizing her because of the extreme sores..help?

These do look very painful and yes, euthanasia is a definite consideration given the fact that the treatment she requires for IMHA may be directly or indirectly related to these painful, open sores. A scraping or biopsy of the lesions may help to provide some indication as the the underlying nature of the skin condition and a biochem tests to check for liver disease which can also be linked to such skin issues could be performed but even after a full diagnosis is reached, management options may be limited. If it is a hypersensitivity reaction to medications, referral to an internist may provide alternative treatment regimens for IMHA which may provide some relief
