Dog ran away, now vomiting and limping. Could he have eaten something?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Border Collie | Male | unneutered | 5 years and 9 months old | 40 lbs

So my dog ran away two days ago and he ended up being found a few blocks away from our house and brought to the humane society for the night. The humane society said they didnt notice anything from him while he was there, no vomiting or anything. We went and picked him up yesterday and he had a very light limp to his walk and, at about 2:30 AM (about 12 hours after we got him home), he began vomiting. Today he’s been unable to keep anything down, he’s not digesting food and its coming out solid.

Severe, persistent vomiting should be assessed by a vet (especially if vomiting water for more than 12-18hours due to a risk of dehydration). It is possible he may have swallowed something while he was roaming which may have caused an obstruction or irritation. Given it happened within hours of coming home it is unlikely to be anything he contracted in the shelter
