My dog's paw wound from a fight: Does it need stitches or heal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Female | unspayed | 55 lbs

My dog got in a fight with the neighbor dog causing her to have an open wound on her paw. I don’t know if stitches are necessary or will the wound just heal on it’s own?

If this wound is less than 48hours old I would recommend suturing as it is over some important joints and tendons but if the skin is too weak or older then bandaging may be preferable. Please have the wound fully assessed by your vet
