Why is my puppy's bark raspy after boarding? Did she lose her voice?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

My 8 month old Chihuahua puppy was boarded this week for 2 nights and when she came back she seems to have “lost her voice”. Her bark/whine is raspy but other than that, no symptoms (no coughing, vomiting, etc). Could excessive barking cause her to loose her “voice”? This was her first time boarding so I’m thinking she barked a lot out of anxiety.

Yes, persistent barking can cause a dog to lose their voice temporarily, it should resolve over the next 2-3weeks. If she is coughing or had any difficulty swallowing you should have her checked by your vet
