My 6-month puppy had parvo. Does she still need the parvo vaccine?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 5 months and 19 days old | 32 lbs

I was hoping someone could advise me on needed vaccines for my new puppy. She's six months old and we just adopted her a few days ago. She has had distemper, rabies, and bordetella vaccines but no parvovirus vaccine. Her records shoe she actually had parvo at 11 weeks old and was successfully treated for it. Does she still need the parvo vaccine, and are there any other vaccines she needs to get? Thank you!

Having has a parvovirus infection does cause a natural immunity, however we do not really know for how long. This could be 6 months or life-long. It appears that a life long immunity is possible. So she needs regular boosters for Distemper, Adenovirus2 , and Infectious Hepatitis and rabies as core vaccines. Bordetella is not required as core vaccine, however recommended if you take your dog to a dog park or walk it in areas with lots of dog traffic and when you want to board it. Here is some information on Canine Parvovirus: https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/veterinary-science-and-veterinary-medicine/canine-parvovirus . You will need to look whether she had 2 or three courses of basic vaccines, and if so when. Bring the paperwork with you to the vet who will then advise you when she will need to be vaccinated next.
