My large dog is moving to a small apartment. How to exercise him?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | neutered | 2 years and 3 months old | 65 lbs

I found out one week ago I must move. I’m not worried about my 5 year old little dog; she’s moved before. I’m concerned about young pit mix, 66 lb Jimmy. We are going from a 9 room house, big yard to a studio apartment on the second floor. They go outside easily, regularly, play, eliminate & hang in the sunshine. I’m 62 with vertigo & worry about walking them enough & exercise. If my budget allows after a month, I may get a dog walker a few times a week. Please advise on the first month. Thanks.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I understand your concern. If you are able to walk him at least 4 times a day then he should be ok. You could consider taking him to the dog park as well and just letting him run as that would also help tremendously. That honestly should be enough for exercise and he could be happy at a smaller apartment as long as he continues to be exercised like that. Good luck and have a great day! I think he will be ok.
