My cat won't urinate for a vet sample. Is this a medical emergency?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Mediumhair | Male | neutered | 18 lbs

Port has had blood in his urine for months, despite numerous treatments and tests. His vet wants a urine sample, so he's been in a cat condo with an empty, clean littet box for three days now. He's passed bowel movements, but absolutely is refusing to urinate. How bad is this, and what can/should I do for him? He usually drinks a flow waterer container a day, but has slowed down with that too.

Lack of urination is certainly concerning. Port may simply be holding his urine, or he could be suffering from a bladder obstruction. I would contact your regular vet and let them know how things are going - they may consider collecting a sample directly from Port’s bladder using ultrasound and a long needle. This has the benefit of being a sterile sample, of cultures are needed. If your Vet has concerns that Port has a bladder obstruction they may also recommend X-rays to check for stones. I would seek veterinary care today, as a bladder obstruction can potentially be fatal.
