Vet wants to recheck dog's lameness before surgery, is this normal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Female | spayed | 68 lbs

I have been told my dog needs TLPO operation after having x rays. However my vet has rung today and said he needs to see her again before operating to see how lame she is. Is this normal? Surely he would have seen how lame she is when she went in to have her X-rays.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This is indeed very standard as your veterinarian likely just wants to make sure that her lameness continues and that it has not improved on its own to make sure that surgery remains the best treatment course for her. Good luck and have a great day!
