My cats are suddenly vomiting and have diarrhea. Should I worry?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Female | spayed | 1 year and 4 months old | 13 lbs

I have two female cats both around a year and a half. And one started throwing up around 3 times. And the other three up more liquidy. I’m not sure how many times. One of them peed outside the litter box and a had diarrhea outside the litter box( again not sure who). They are still playing, drinking water, and just ate. They haven’t thrown up since they last ate. This all happened within the hour? Should I be concerned or did they just get into something.

Vomiting and diarrhea isn't normal, so I would be concerned. It could be one cat is vomiting while the other has diarrhea, or one cat could be having both. Since they both are acting normal, I will give you a home remedy to try for both of them. I recommend withholding food for 12-24 hours, then feeding a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in their normal diet. If the vomiting continues in the absence of food, either of them vomits the bland diet, either of them continues to have diarrhea, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, they will need to see a vet right away. If you can't tell which one is having the vomiting and diarrhea while trying this home remedy, take them both into the vet to be safe. Best of luck!
