Is it safe to trim my cat's paw fur to stop her from sliding?

Hi, My 11 year old Persian has a touch of arthritis but what's making her walking even more awkward is the incredible amount of fur that is covering her pads and causing her to slide across the floor. I'm aware that they have whiskers on th backs of their legs but would it be safe for me to trim the hairs on her feet?

Yes, it would be safe to trim Cherry Blossom's fur around her feet, but I would use clippers instead of scissors so you don't accidentally cut her feet. If you don't have clippers and are afraid you may cut her feet with the scissors, you can make an appointment with a groomer to have her feet trimmed. Best of luck.

We do routinely shave cats that have matted or soiled fur. How easy this will be will depend on your cat's personality, so you may need to enlist the help of a professional groomer! They have special groomer clippers to shave the fur to different lengths so hopefully they can keep some of her hair, or they may be able to remove the burrs. It also might be helpful getting a detangler or creme rinse made for pets and spraying it on the areas and then trying to comb over the areas with a fine comb, as it may loosen the burrs from the fur and help you avoid having to shave her! I wouldn't recommend using scissors to trim her down as it is very easy to accidentally cut a cat's thin skin. You will also want to keep her indoors if it is cold in your area and her coat is still short.

Baby baby has a loose piece of paw padding at the edge of his paw padding. He keeps licking at it as if he’s trying to take it off. Is it safe if I cut it off with nail clippers for him?
If it is only the black, thick, superficial part of the pad, then it is safe to cut it off with scissors or nail clipper. That part of the pad does not have nerves or blood supply, so there should not be any pain or bleed when you do it.

What product could i use to get rid fur under my 6 month old husky paws ?
Hi there and thank you for using Boop by Petco to address your question. Trimming the hair from between the toes can help prevent Luna from slipping on a hard surface such as tile and also help prevent mud and snow from building up between the toes. There are no products that I would suggest using to dissolve the fur as any chemical applied to the skin has the potential for a reaction. I always recommend using hair clippers / trimmers to remove the hair from between the toes. This is what I used for my own dog and it worked just fine. I hope this helps! My rag doll cat is about 12 years old and is declawed from the front but I noticed she has this one crooked nail still on her front paws. Should I cut this nail? I don’t want it to hurt her when she walks. Thank you!
Yes you should very carefully cut this nail before it causes skin problems. If you are afraid to do this, take her to your vet to have it cut properly. They may show you how, so you can do it yourself the next time when it is necessary.

My older cat appears to have altogether stopped grooming herself. Is there anything I can do to help decrease the amount of clumpy, matted hair she has? I'm fearful to cut or shave any matted hair since I don't want to cut her skin.
Definitely don't cut! You are very likely to cut the skin if you use scissors. You can use shaving clippers or take Calico to a groomer. Once the mats are gone, you will need to brush her daily to remove loose hairs to prevent the mats from coming back. I would also recommend having Calico evaluated by her vet to see if she has arthritis preventing her from being able to groom. Medications may make her more comfortable.

How do you get hair balls out of a cats fur. We’ve cut them out a few times but they are very close to her skin and were afraid of cutting her. What’s a safe way to remove them
Yes, you are correct, you could accidentally cut Sophia. I've done this myself! My cat needed stitches. I felt awful. You can take her into a groomer to have them shaved out, that's the safest thing to do. You can also buy shaving razor for pets from a pet store to do it yourself. I hope this helps!

My cat has a clubbed paw, and this has caused problem with her claws getting stuck in stuff, she has even pulled out some of the claw. I was wondering if it would be smart for me to get that one page declawed?
Hello, and thank you for your question. I would try keeping the nails very trim by cutting them every two weeks with cat nail clippers. It may be worth visiting a pet groomer or the vet to be shown how short the nails can be cut. If she is still catching her claws on the furniture even with regular trimming, then you may need to consider declawing. However, declawing is a painful procedure with chance of complications, so I would not encourage doing this unless absolutely necessary. I hope this helps! Our 15-year-old kitty has some issues; shes polydactyl on her front paws, they have never been retractable, if they arent trimmed the curl and grow into her paw causing infections. How do you trim them safely?
Hello and thank you for your question about Maggie. Many polydactyl cats have the same issue and routine nail trimming is a must. This should be done every 2-4 weeks depending on how fast the nails grow. I advise to go online and watch a few videos on trimming cat’s nails. It’s easier to see the process than to read about it. In general, you want to trim off the hook portion of the nail and avoid the quick (that’s the pink tissue within the nail) by at least 5mm. You can use human or smal pet nail trimmers and having a second person to hold Maggie may help. I hope you found this helpful and please feel free to post any additional questions.

Absolutely! It is easy to clip a cat's nails at home as long as she is relatively cooperative. You can squeeze the tip of each toenail to extrude the claw and identify the pink quick. Clip the claw avoiding the quick. If you're unsure or your cat is frisky most grooming facilities and some veterinarians will trim nails and can probably demonstrate the proper technique.

My dog, a young rescue "mixed terrier", has very thick ear flaps at their ends. It does not appear that there is any flesh, just thicks 'pads' of fur. It is impossible to brush out and I can't tell where his flesh and these wads of clumped hair separ
Please don’t use scissors to trim the fur since it’s easy to cut the ear flap by mistake. I recommend taking him to PetCo where the groomer can take clippers and go down the ear from top to bottom and shave off the fur. Once it’s short and growing in if you comb or brush the fur it should not get tangled into these pads of fur. I’ve found that once they get like you describe the only way to get rid of the pads is to shave them off. Thanks for using Boop by Petco to help you care for Shadow.
