How to control a large, hyper dog that pulls, barks, and jumps?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Male | unneutered | 225 lbs

I have a 2 year old pure bred German Sheperd. He is so big it’s hard to walk him because he barks at other dogs, pulls the leash the direction he wants to go and I can’t get him to settle down most of the time. He also gets way too excited and jumps on children when he is outside so he stays inside my apartment unless he is let out to use the bathroom. How am I able to stay in control of such a big hyper dog?

A big strong dog like your Mufasa can easily become a danger, so it is absolutely mandatory that he listens to you and that he learns several basic commands such as heel, sit, lie down, come here, etc. The best way to teach him that is to become a member of a German Shepherd Dog club in your area, where they have training for obedience , etc, or consult with a dog trainer you can work with to teach the commands. It is important not to just give the dog to the trainer to train, but to have both of you , dog and owner, learn how it is done. This way your dog will not just listen to the trainer and play games with you, but will learn to respect you as well.
