Why is my dog throwing up blood and not eating for several days?

Poor Shelby! I would have her seen by a vet immediately. It's quite serious that there is blood in her vomit, and that could be caused by a trauma to the GI tract from all the vomiting. The vomiting could be caused by eating something rotten, GI illness, a foreign body, intestinal worms, or pancreatitis. The vet can diagnose what is causing her vomiting and can treat her for it. Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! Blood in the vomit indicates most commonly stomach lining irritation or ulceration. The only way heat could cause this is if Doggy is experiencing heat stroke (high body temperature, collapse, etc). When a dog is having heat stroke it is obvious and life threatening. Just general hot weather shouldn't cause vomiting let alone with blood. Causes of vomiting are: viral (especially parvo) or bacterial infections, intestinal parasites, he ate something inappropriate, pancreatitis, a blockage from eating a foreign object that is stuck, toxin ingestion, clotting or platelet problem or from something local to Lebanon. If he continues to vomit with blood that is an emergency and he should be seen by a Vet. If he is lethargic and won't eat currently he should see a Vet. Otherwise I would start a bland diet of boiled chicken breast with rice. Feed 1 cup per 20 lbs per day for 3-5 days to rest his stomach. i wish you the best!

The causes are many including toxins (rat poison), a dietary problem, irritants, foreign bodies, infections by viruses/bacteria, or other reasons that impair the blood clotting system. Some autoimmune diseases and tick borne diseases come to mind also. Only your vet can assess and run the appropriate tests to determine what is going on. Normally after an exam the following can be advised - blood coagulation studies, standard blood tests, fecal exam, x-rays/ultrasound, etc. Treatment of course depends on the cause determined.
