What's the best age to bring a puppy home to prevent problems?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | unneutered | 1 month and 2 days old | 5 lbs

my uncle had a litter of puppies (lab/pit mix) and it wasn’t on purpose, he is a very busy man and cannot care for the puppies in some ways. they are a month and 2 days old and on some cites it says that puppies should be introduced into house training - well he doesn’t do that. i plan on taking a puppy but i’m nervous that if i let him stay there the whole 8 weeks he will develop bad habits. but i also heard if i take him too early he will also develop problems... what to do?!!

Wait until the puppies are 8 weeks old and then get one. You can then carefully start potty-training your puppy, They are babies, so they will have accidents. Most likely potty training will not be 100% successful until they are at least 3 months old. If you let the puppy stay until it is 8 weeks old, it will not develop bad habits. On the contrary, it will have the opportunity to get well socialised as it will be able to play with its siblings and still has mommy for comfort.
