Is it safe to take my 3-month-old puppy to a pet store before shots?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | unneutered | 20 lbs

I’m a new time dog owner and my puppy is three months old and has had his second round of shots. I took him on a short walk and to the pet store the other day where people did pet him. However he didn’t come in direct contact with any dogs. I didn’t realize that I wasn’t supposed to do this until his last round of shots. Did I put him in danger or am I just being a paranoid first time dog owner?

Theoretically you may have endangered him. Practically, however, it is unlikely that he picked up any disease. I do not think it is advisable to bring your dog to a pet store, no matter what vaccination status or age, as you never know whether the dogs brought to the store are all healthy. It would be very easy to pick up kennel cough, a highly contagious upper respiratory disease. You do not have to be paranoid, but caution never hurt.
