Why is my 9-week-old puppy breathing fast and coughing at night?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Female | unspayed | 2 months and 10 days old | 5 lbs

I’ve got a 9 week old cavachon puppy and have noticed some things with her breathing. She breathes very very fast short breaths while sleeping, she sleeps with her mouth closed and I’m not sure if this could be to do with it. Her nose also goes quite dry at times, but I’ve heard that this can happen while they sleep too. The other thing is coughing. Mostly during the night she coughs quite a lot, as if she is trying to cough something up, it sounds like a cat with a hairball.

I would recommend bringing Pippa to a veterinarian especially if she is coughing and breathing hard. She may have an upper respiratory infection but could also be something more. Your veterinarian can listen to her to make sure her lungs are clear and if not can perform x-rays to make sure she doesn't have pneumonia or bronchitis. Since she is so young I recommend a veterinarian sooner than later. Puppies can get sick and decline quickly. Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
