My cat's paw nail is damaged and swollen. When should I see a vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Mediumhair | Male | neutered | 3 years and 3 months old | 19 lbs

My cat came home with both of his thumb nails damaged. One is completely missing and the other looks like there is some nail left but it appears to be pushed up into the bed. Neither paw is warm to the touch nor bleeding at this time. He is favoring the side that is pushed in some. That one looks a bit swollen and somewhat deformed. I'm not sure how this could have happened or how to treat him? Any input would be very appreciated. Thank-you

It looks like your cat’s toenail has been sheared off, probably from an injury, fight or being hit by a car. My best recommendation is to take your car to the vet where they will be able to fully clean the area around the nail, trim the nails if necessary, and give your cat an antibiotic and pain medication if needed. I hope this helps. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Best of luck.
