Why is my dog biting his tail, and what are these lumps? Mango worms?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | American Pit Bull Terrier | Male | unneutered | 5 months and 30 days old | 44 lbs

My dog seems to be chasing barking and biting his tail the whole day. Could this be mango worms? There is some lumps on his tail, and I have read an article stating that there is an outbreak in South Africa. Is their a way in which I can treat him without consulting our local vet?

Hello, sorry to hear about Troy. Its difficult to assess the lesions from the pictures you have posted, but yes indeed those could be Mango Worms. However, there are other potential causes for this including flea bites and allergies. You could try bathing him and applying flea medication to see if this soothes his tail chasing. Ultimately if it does not, you may indeed need to consult with your veterinarian. Alternatively, you may attempt to look at his tail for some form of a white hole which could be more consistent with a mango fly larva. If so, you can cover its breathing hole with some lube and this may force the larva to come out. Hope this helps and best of luck.
