Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | unneutered | 4 months and 21 days old | 78 lbs
My five month old mastiff mix puppy had an xray today of his front left leg as he had been limping on it. The vet said he had a "tear" in his growth plate in his left shoulder. He recommended restricting his activity and when he is active, gentle slow walks only. He feels that it may heal on it's own if given time. Will it heal? He will be a very large dog, I cant have such a large dog walking on three legs, and my husband has already said he'd rather put him down than pay for a costly surgery.

Most joint and cartilage injuries in puppies will heal with acceptable mobility as long as the bones are not displaced and they can be restricted to slow, steady leash walking. I recommend keeping him on a high quality puppy food until 18months of age and adding a joint supplement including glucosamine and omega fatty acids. It would be expected that arthritis may develop in the joint in later life and long term supplementation may be worthwhile
