Why is my dog's eye swollen and crusty? Benadryl isn't working.

Hello, our 9 year old chihuahua ended up with swelling under his eye yesterday. He’s eating, drinking, and acting mostly normal but it’s obviously bothering him. The only place he won’t let us touch is right above his eye. I don’t know if he was stung or bitten or if something else. His actual eyeball seems ok. We’ve been giving him his doggie Benadryl 2x a day but the swelling isn’t budging. His under eye seems a bit crustier than normal, too. Any ideas? Thank you for your help.

Hello. This sounds like a Carnassial tooth root abscess ( 4th upper premolar ). This is a very common dental infection & usually means the tooth needs to be removed. At the very least, he definitely needs to be started on antibiotics & needs a good dental cleaning. Once done, these things tend to heal up very nicely. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
