My Morkie has chronic bloody, mucousy diarrhea after spay. What to do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Female | spayed | 3.5 lbs

My teacup morkie has been doing diarrhea for the past few months with one case of it being bloody. It is always mucous-y. Her GI tract got bad after spay surgery 1 year ago, since then she does diarrhea frequently. I went to the ER and the vet when she did diarrhea. I am honestly very frustrated because the vets keep saying the same thing, but not fixing the problem. They say they don't know what's causing it exactly then hand me antibiotics like Metronidazole. Any recommendations or advice?

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Kia. Her problem sounds very frustrating. I would recommend baseline bloodwork as well as a specific gastrointestinal panel that tests cobalamin, folate, TLI and PLI. She will also likely need an abdominal ultrasound. This is looking for signs of chronic GI disease such as pancreatitis, pancreatic insufficiency, inflammatory bowel disease or a protein losing disease called lymphangestasia. Lastly, I would consider a diet trial with a prescription hydrolyzed diet to rule out a food allergy. The work up can be costly, but you will avoid some many vet visits in the future if her problem is diagnosed and well managed. I hope this information helps!
