Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Siberian Husky | Male | unneutered | 7.5 lbs

My puppy goes from having soft runny poop to solid poop. It changes throughout the day. He also just vomited some whole pieces of kibble from breakfast. Should i be worried?

Poor Aiko! Some of the most common causes for soft stools in puppies are GI parasites, the addition of new foods or treats without a transition period, and stress. The fact that the stools are sometimes firm makes me a bit less concerned that this is a more serious cause, but we should investigate what the problem may be. Firstly, I would recommend having a stool sample submitted to your vet to look for parasites. Vomiting and loose stools can sometimes be a sign of gastrointestinal parasites. Secondly, Aiko should be eating a well-balanced puppy diet. New treats and foods should be slowly added to his diet. Avoid items with high fat as this sometimes causes tummy upset. Make sure he isn't eating things he shouldn't be. Puppies have pretty sensitive stomachs. Excessive stress and/or exercise can sometimes cause loose stools too. For today, withhold any treats so his tummy can settle. Offer him his next meal and see if he is still vomiting. If so, you should call your vet. Hopefully, this problem can be resolved soon! Good luck!

Hello. Vomiting and loose stool can be anything from a case of mild gastritis (got into the garbage and ate something silly), to very serious infections and viruses. As long as he is still eating and keeping food down, bright, happy and playing, then it is ok to try just boiled boneless skinless chicken breasts and boiled rice in small frequent meals for 2 days, and then re-introduce his normal kibble. If he is unable to keep any food down and just vomits everything up, then you need to have him x-rayed to check for an obstruction. Also, avoid fatty foods, raw food and bones- any of these can cause gastritis at any time.

If Chance continues to vomit, you need to seek veterinary help as he may have an infection or a foreign body stuck in his GI track causing an obstruction. Since he is playing and eating ok this is a good sign that maybe it is not serious, but you need to continue to monitor him very closely.

Hello, sorry to hear about Groovy Q. I would be concerned that he may have something in his stomach since he is vomiting continuously and has pain right under his rib cage. The mucus of the stool could be associated with inflammation of the colon, however, other causes of this especially parasitic can still be considered. I would recommend having him evaluated today by a veterinarian in case he does have something stuck in his stomach which may require surgery of scoping. Hope this helps and best of luck.
