Help! My dog keeps licking her surgical wound raw after bump removal.

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 9 years and 3 months old | 4 lbs

Not pictures from today but she had a bump removed the 18th. She keeps licking it. When the bump was there she didn’t even notice it. I had took her to the vet because I thought she had an infection. She woke me up this morning with the sound of her licking. She licked so much her skin felt raw. It was finally starting to heal. Now it’s red & I see the stitches again. I resorted to putting a regular bandaid she can’t take off on. Ecollars are too big. What to do? I’m so upset I wanted to cry

Hello. Thank you for using PetCoach. I'm sorry this is happening to Precious. Try not to be too upset. It is imperative that you keep her from licking it. I strongly recommend you use an Ecollar. Try one of these flexible ones instead of the hard plastic ones. Remember the collar has to be long enough to go past the end of her nose or she will still be able to lick. ( https://www.petco.com/shop/en/petcostore/product/dog/dog-health-and-wellness/dog-ecollars/all-four-paws-tan-comfy-cone-5000727--1 ) The other option is to put a basket muzzle on her and keep it on her at all times. They can eat and drink with these on: ( https://www.morrco.com/basket-muzzles.html ) As you know, this area is very hard to bandage and often times the dogs will just pull the bandage off. Even if she leaves the bandage alone, it is not recommended to keep it covered as it needs air to dry out. Hope this helps. Best wishes.
