My cat inhaled baby powder. Is his coughing a sign of lung issues?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Maine Coon | Male | neutered | 11 months and 20 days old

Hello. In August 2017 my cat Leo ran into baby powder ..a lot of it :( at the time I rushed over to him freaked out. Not sure if he inhaled it. I had wiped his paws but didn't know what else to do. In February 2018 I noticed he started coughing. Now he coughs once a week or so. Is this related to the baby powder incident :( I've been so anxious and so upset as I feel I have caused him lung problems. I don't know what to do.

Hello, sorry to hear about Leo. It is likely not associated with the baby powder. Cats may develop other primary lower air way diseases such as feline asthma that may present as wheezing and coughing. This typically responds well to medications but may require x-rays to confirm this. I would recommend having him evaluated by his veterinarian to make sure that he does not have feline asthma. I hope this helps and best of luck.
