My dog's paw pad is raw. Should I bandage it or how do I treat it?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Fox Terrier | Male | neutered | 1 year and 3 months old

My mini foxie has injured his paw pad, he has a small (a quartrer to half a cm in diameter) circular area where the external layer has been worn away and left a pink, raw section. It is not bleeding but looks painful. What should I do to treat this injury? I have disinfected the paw with betadine and wrapped it with gauze and an adhesive bandage but he keeps trying to take it off... Is there anything else I should be doing? My mum thinks I am overreacting and that I have already gone overboard.

If the wound is only partial thickness and not bleeding it is probably of no advantage to bandage the paw if it is distressing him. I recommend bathing the area 3-4 times daily with saline or betadine, if lame you should contact your vet to discuss pain relief
