My dog has a warm, tender leg lump. Is it cancer or infection?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Rottweiler | Male | neutered | 5 years and 10 months old | 78 lbs

My 5yr old Rottie cross boy had tto surgery on his hind leg 7 months ago and was doing fine. Yesterday I noticed a swelling halfway down his tibia. He is not lame but the lump is warm and a bit tender to the touch. He was running around playing with my other dog prior to this. Otherwise he seems fine although he has been panting a bit last few evenings.am terrified that it is osteosarcoma as I lost another dog to that last year. Can’t get to my vets today as it is a public holiday. Am v worried.

This sounds more like an area of infection. Bone cancer usually doesn't have a warm swelling to start, and an infection does. With cancer the bone itself would be painful. Usually with bone cancer you see a lameness before any visual changes. Do bring him in for an exam when you can. He may need antibiotics if this is an infection.
