Hello my dog’s pad is torn open . It happened Friday . Bleed quite a bit we put pressure until it stopped cleaned and applied an antibiotic ointment and wrapped the foot . She is taking Cephalexin 3Xday ( weights 45lbs) I am wondering if we are doing what we are supposed to do ? Should I keep the wound covered or open ? Thanks

You are doing a good job. I would keep the wound covered for a few days until it looks like some scar tissue is filling in. Then I would leave it open since being open to the air will help it heal more quickly. When it’s open I would soak the paw in warm water with epsoms salt twice a day which will clean it and start to toughen the skin. Pads take a long time to heal and this can be painful, so be patient and limit the amount of time she’s on her feet.
