Why is my whippet's swollen, red thigh worse after activity?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Whippet | Male | neutered | 5 years and 8 months old | 28 lbs

My whippet started limping while we were out walking on Saturday but showed no signs in pain. On Monday I noticed a red mark, and whilst out walking the mark increased in size and became very swollen. He's not limping or showing signs of pain around the house, he's eating fine and still wants to play, but his thigh is still swollen and very red. It seems to get worse with increased movement, then the swelling goes down when he rests. Does this look like a problem with his muscle?

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Brandon. He needs to see his veterinarian regarding the swelling as it appears quite large. He could have gotten an insect bite or sting while on your walk. He could have a skin infection or even a small fracture in his leg. Typically muscular problems do not result in so much swelling. In the meantime, I would keep him very quiet as this seems to help. I hope this information helps!
