Adopted dog aggressively coughing, trying to vomit: is it kennel cough?

My dog Dottie is acting like she is going to vomit but never does she’s coughing really agresively. she’s done this like 5 times in the last 20 minutes and I wasn’t worried the first time but now I don’t know what to think she hasn’t pooped today but has been eating and drinking normally she’s a Pitbull mix with a French bulldog and I just got her from Petsmarts adoption day a few weeks ago so she should be healthy. do you know what’s wrong with her? I want to be sure she’s not in any danger. Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 40 lbs

This is suspicious of kennel cough, which is an infection of the upper respiratory system. The throwing up action when coughing is normally seen when dogs have a bad cough like this. Kennel cough is most suspicious, since she came from a shelter. They can also develop a cough with conditions like pneumonia, heart worm and heart disease, but these are less likely. It's best to have Dottie checked out by a veterinarian. These infections are usually easily treated by the vet. The shelters usually offer veterinary services for no fee within a couple weeks of adoption, so it would be good to call the shelter that was adopting her through PetsMart.
