Adopted dog aggressively coughing, trying to vomit: is it kennel cough?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 40 lbs

My dog Dottie is acting like she is going to vomit but never does she’s coughing really agresively. she’s done this like 5 times in the last 20 minutes and I wasn’t worried the first time but now I don’t know what to think she hasn’t pooped today but has been eating and drinking normally she’s a Pitbull mix with a French bulldog and I just got her from Petsmarts adoption day a few weeks ago so she should be healthy. do you know what’s wrong with her? I want to be sure she’s not in any danger.

This is suspicious of kennel cough, which is an infection of the upper respiratory system. The throwing up action when coughing is normally seen when dogs have a bad cough like this. Kennel cough is most suspicious, since she came from a shelter. They can also develop a cough with conditions like pneumonia, heart worm and heart disease, but these are less likely. It's best to have Dottie checked out by a veterinarian. These infections are usually easily treated by the vet. The shelters usually offer veterinary services for no fee within a couple weeks of adoption, so it would be good to call the shelter that was adopting her through PetsMart. I hope that helps and Dottie gets better soon.
