My new cat is sneezing with boogers. Should I take him to the vet?

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Male | neutered | 2 years and 3 months old | 5 lbs

My cat is new to me. Only about 4 weeks in my house. He sneezes and big boogers come out. Nothing bloody or weird with them other than I've never seen something like this before. Should I be worried? Is he sick? I was giving him so L-Lysine given to me by the rescue center but that is long gone now.

It could be that Chester is suffering from a respiratory infection or he could have allergies. I do think it's a good idea to have him seen by a vet for this problem, just to make sure everything is ok. I would also get some more L-Lysine for him. Enisyl and Viralys are both good brands, and can be purchased over the counter without a prescription. Give your vet a call to make an appointment for him. Best of luck.

Charlie is one handsome little guy! Many cats chronically carry herpesvirus and/or calicivirus, which can shed more and cause respiratory or eye issues during times of stress. It is not uncommon to experience these types of respiratory issues when bringing a new cat home due to the stress of the experience. However, in some cases these viral issues can develop secondary bacterial infections that require antibiotics for treatment. If Charlie's nasal discharge is yellow or green, he should go to the vet for an exam and will likely need a course of antibiotics. If the discharge is clear, you can keep any eye on him for the next few days and take him to the vet if the sneezing persists or worsens. Should you decide to monitor him for a few days, try adding an L-lysine supplement (Viralys is on example), as this is thought to decrease viral shedding. It's highly possible that they're all experiencing a flare-up of feline herpesvirus, which tends to produce mild upper respiratory signs such as sneezing and ocular discharge. Most cats already have the virus in their bodies but don't have symptoms, but living in a stressful environment (shelters) or going through stressful events (having a new cat brought home) can trigger recurrence of the active infection. If it's been a week and a half they likely do need to see the vet, however most of them will improve with supplementation with the amino acid lysine and supportive care.

If he is all else is normal, you can try over the counter lysine- often sold at pharmacies and pet stores. It is an antiviral and can help for upper respiratory viruses. If this is a new finding and he seems not to feel well, it would be safer to take him in.... I would also take a warm washcloth and gently exfoliate his nose and continue to keep his eyes clean as you have. I hope this helps!

Judging from your description, it sounds as if he is fighting an upper respiratory infection. Many of these are a result of a viral infection. I would recommend having him examined by a veterinarian so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. He likely needs an antibiotic for a secondary bacterial infection potentially and a lysine supplement to help reduce the severity / duration of the viral infection. There are multiple lysine supplements that you can find online or at your local PetCo for cats. I hope this helps! Congrats on your new cat, but I'm sorry Felix isn't feeling well! Vaccines won't clear a respiratory infection, and in cats, a common cause of respiratory infections is a virus. I suspect that your vet may have given Felix an antibiotic shot in the hopes that the respiratory infection was caused by bacteria, but if it is caused by a virus, antibiotics won't help either. I can suggest some home remedies to see if that helps with his symptoms. My cat has been sneezing for a week and half. He has a little bit of brown eye crust. He is eating fine. He acts normal. I have been given him 250 mg l-lysine for about a week. I read that this might be something that will come back from time to time
If you know that he has a virus and has had an upper respiratory infection (URI) before then yes this may come back occasionally, but if it is going to clear up on its own it will usually do so within a week. If you know that he has feline leukemia or feline aids then I would strongly recommend to get him seen by your vet sooner rather than later. These guys do not have good immune systems and an URI can quickly turn into pneumonia. Most cats with immunocompromised viruses usually need help with antibiotics to help them get over such infections. I would continue to give l-lysine until he is well. If you do not think kitty is immunocompromised, then I would still be concerned that it has been going on for 10 days. You can try adding in Benadryl - see link below- in case there is an allergy component to see if this helps. If it isn’t improving, worsens, or at any point he isn’t eating or lethargic, I would have your vet take a look at him. Your vet will be able to get him started on som

This could be due to a viral or bacterial infection. I would suggest having Carl examined by a veterinarian sooner rather than later so that the infection does not become more severe.
