My dog ate fried chicken bones from trash. How long to watch and feed?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

My Chihuahua got in the trash and ate 1-2-3 fried chicken pieces w bones, they were already eaten but there were still fried parts. They weren't mine so I don't know how many. I told her to drop it but as usual, she hurried up and ate it. I gave her some of her hard food right after to hopefully mix with it so it won't cause too much upset. How long should I keep an eye on her? Would it be ok to feed her her dinner if she seems ok and wants to eat it?

Hello. I would keep a watch on her for the next 72 hours, after which if all seems OK, then she will be fine. If she seems pretty normal & hungry, then I would feed her 1/2 of her normal dinner, wait an hour & feed the rest. The bones will hopefully just be digested & if there are not too much of the fatty fried parts, then she should be fine, but it is always best to be a little cautious & proactive. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.

He is likely going to be okay but you should still monitor him closely for a bit longer. Monitor for any vomiting, diarrhea, decreased appetite and discomfort. The bones have a good chance of being digested without causing a major problem.
