My dog ate fried chicken bones from trash. How long to watch and feed?

My Chihuahua got in the trash and ate 1-2-3 fried chicken pieces w bones, they were already eaten but there were still fried parts. They weren't mine so I don't know how many. I told her to drop it but as usual, she hurried up and ate it. I gave her some of her hard food right after to hopefully mix with it so it won't cause too much upset. How long should I keep an eye on her? Would it be ok to feed her her dinner if she seems ok and wants to eat it?

Hello. I would keep a watch on her for the next 72 hours, after which if all seems OK, then she will be fine. If she seems pretty normal & hungry, then I would feed her 1/2 of her normal dinner, wait an hour & feed the rest. The bones will hopefully just be digested & if there are not too much of the fatty fried parts, then she should be fine, but it is always best to be a little cautious & proactive. He is likely going to be okay but you should still monitor him closely for a bit longer. Monitor for any vomiting, diarrhea, decreased appetite and discomfort. The bones have a good chance of being digested without causing a major problem.

I would just watch him closely. If you notice any vomiting or diarrhea then I would have your vet take a look at him. Chances are he only got a small amount. You could feed him a little canned food tonight or boiled boneless, skinless chicken and white rice to help bulk up his stool to help coat any of the fragments IF he swallowed any of it. If any abnormal behavior is noticed, I would take him to the vet. I hope this helps!

Hello, thank you for your question. Bones can sometimes lead to problems within the GI tract such as obstruction or puncture of the intestinal wall. However, bones can be digested by stomach acid depending on the quantity and size of the bones. Since your dog is acting normally at this time I would recommend continuing to monitor her for any symptoms such as inappetance, vomiting, or diarrhea. If she develops any of these symptoms I would recommend seeking veterinary care. In the meantime you could offer her a canned food diet to help things pass through comfortably. Alternatively you could increase offer canned pumpkin or bread (with no olive oil) which will have a similar effect as canned food. Hope this helps, good luck!

Thanks for using Boop by Petco! In general, if there hasn’t been a problem for 48 hours, you’re in the clear. Continue feeding Indy as usual. If there is some diarrhea but Indy is still eating and playing and active, im still not terribly concerned. But if vomiting starts or you’re seeing lethargy or loss of appetite, it’s time to head in to the vet as soon as possible. Hope this helps and best of luck to you and Indy!

My dog ate half a rotisserie chicken and 3 rib bones
Poor dog. Unfortunately bones have the potential to cause intestinal obstruction in pets, so you want to monitor him/her for he next 24-48 hrs for signs of trouble. The rotisserie chicken can also cause an acute inflammatory response of the pancreas (pancreatitis), so monitoring for that is also advised. Watch out for signs that include: excessive vomiting (even water), lack of appetite, and abdominal pain. If you see these symptoms then your pet should seek medical attention by your local vet immediately for a proper care. In the meantime you should feed your pet a bland diet of plain boiled chicken and rice or cottage cheese to help the stomach settle. You can also offer your pet 1/2-1 slice of bread (depending on the size of your pet) twice a day to help bind the bones and encourage passage through the gut. Also taking your pet on 20-30 minute brisk walks twice a day can help promote GI (gastrointestinal) motility and encourage passage of the bones as wel. I hope this helps and I h

Instead, you should monitor Riku at home for the next 24-48hrs for symptoms of vomiting, lack of appetite, lethargy difficulties to defecate. If you see any of them, you should take him to your local vets for an appointment as these symptoms would suggest gastrointestinal obstruction. However, most likely the little bones will be digested rapidly in the stomach and Riku will not show any worrying symptoms at all.

Hello. As long as Bandit did not show any indication or irritation or problems swallowing the chicken bone, he should be fine. The bone will most likely soften in his stomach & be digested. Just watch him for the next few days for any signs of digestive distress including vomiting, a loss of appetite, bloating or abdominal pain. The normal gastric transit cycle is about three days (can be more or less), so I would just monitor him for a couple of more days before worrying about the bones getting stuck or causing a problem. While bones have the potential to get stuck in the stomach or intestines, they usually pass through just fine. While I don't advise feeding bones, the truth is that many dogs eat bones (chicken, lamb, beef, goat, fish) on a daily basis for their whole lives and don't ever have any complications from it. I just mention this to help ease any big concern, because more than likely, Ace will be just fine. If they did get stuck, then it would be apparent. A bowel obstruction or damage, would cause vomiting and pain. Ace would not be active and would likely not want to do anything. If you do happen to notice this, then it's best to take him to the vet as soon as possible. Hello. Monitor eating and pooping carefully for the next 3 days. Also watch for sleepiness, pain when you touch his abdomen, vomiting or diarrhea. It is a good idea to boil some plain rice and feed this to 'pack' the bone. Feed small frequent meals for the next few days. Any vomiting, pain in the abdomen, or not wanting to eat and you need to take him to a vet right away.
